Why clean your leather?
Leather is an animal skin that breathes and needs maintenance to stay in good condition. What could be more beautiful than a well-maintained leather interior? Using good products will allow you to keep your leather looking like new. To prevent cracking, yellowing, discoloration, or color transfer caused by jeans, for example.
A thorough cleaning of leather that is a few years old will allow you to recover the original color. Indeed, beige and white leathers quickly turn grey.
Please forget everything you may have heard, such as: moisturizing creams, Mixa baby, neat's-foot oil. All these products are very bad for leather.
How to recognize leather that needs cleaning?
Shiny, greasy to the touch, and very stiff leather needs to be cleaned and protected. Leather is subjected to many aggressions over time. Excess sebum, perspiration, and grease from various products handled by the driver all tend to clog the pores of the leather and saturate it with grease. This is what eventually gives it that shiny appearance.
How to clean your leather?
The original appearance of leather is matte and supple. To clean it, equip yourself with a powerful cleaner (or a gentle one for new leather) as well as a leather brush. Simply apply some to the brush and work in circles on your leather item to dislodge dirt from the pores. Then simply wipe the product off with a clean microfiber cloth.
Repeat the operation if the result is not satisfactory enough or if the leather still feels quite greasy. If needed, you can also use powerful cleaners specifically designed for leather. There is no need to press hard on the brush, as the work is done on the surface.
How to protect your leather?
Warning: It is essential to have cleaned your leather before applying any protective lotion. If the pores are clogged, it will do more harm than good.
Once the deep cleaning of the leather is done, it should be nourished with protective lotions, which help restore suppleness to the leather, prevent it from cracking over time, and also apply (for certain products) a UV-protection barrier.
The protective lotion is applied easily, using a cotton applicator, or a microfiber cloth if needed, by spreading the product evenly from seam to seam. Allow the lotion to penetrate for a few hours so the leather can properly absorb the necessary product, then wipe with a microfiber cloth if needed in case of excess.
The treatment is generally renewed every 3 months for a regularly used vehicle.
